Harrow student travel to Singapore for IASAS MUN PDF Print E-mail

From the 11th to 13th of November, a group of 8 Harrow students attended the Model United Nations conference hosted by the Singaporean American School (SAS). 6 of the students were in our sixth form:

Disha C12 – Chair (Environmental Committee)
Ellen K12 – Chad (Security Council)
Kabu B12 – Poland (Political Committee)
Mek K12 – Poland (Human Rights Committee)
Samuel Reid C12 – Chad (Human Rights Committee)
Rishabh S12 – Vietnam (Human Rights Committee)

With overloaded enthusiasm, we convened to committee debating on resolutions generating numerous notable arguments. Here are some viewpoints on some of the committees:

“The Security Council was very different to the other committees because there are fewer people and everything is spontaneous as new issues were introduced comparable to emergency situations. Debate is far more controversial with the 5 veto powers and people have to pay greater attention to their countries views. Halfway through we stole the comfy chairs from the political committee and even the Sec Gen was scared!” – Ellen K12 - Chad in the Security Council

“It was my first time chairing, I was nervous at the beginning, however, as time passed I became more confident. My responsibilities included maintaining order of MUN procedures in the Environmental Committee. On the whole, this conference was great in terms of experience and of course, socialising. I would also like to take this opportunity to encourage others to join MUN.” – Disha C12 - Chair in the Environmental Committee

“Being Vietnam in the Human Rights Committee required a lot of engaging discussion, as Vietnam is suffering from many of the issues discussed in the conference especially Child Labour. This meant I had to express Vietnam’s views thoroughly in order to give a clear picture of the situation and come up with the solid solutions.” – Rishabh S12 - Vietnam in the Human Rights Committee

Following two days of engaging passion and gusto, delegates moved from committees and reconvened at the General Assembly, where delegates from all respected committees were met and debated resolutions passed in committees.

“The General Assembly was unmatched in terms of energy and will. The atmosphere was perfect for discussion and debate. Every delegate had a positive state of mind believing they could ‘change’ the world. The General Assembly always proves to be the highlight of every MUN, but this was special with interesting debate. Before we realised, It was over!- as Mek 12K said, “Post MUN blues are hard to get by.

The highlight of this trip is the opportunity to converse between people of different schools by working together with them.Lastly, I would like to end with a quote from one of the guest speakers at the conference:

“If you never go, then you’ll never know.” – Professional photographer, Scott Woodward.

Visit to Thai Airways a flying success

Have you ever wanted to fly an Airbus A340 super jumbo jet? That’s exactly what a group of Harrow students did when they visited the Thai Airways International Plc. earlier this month – well, almost exactly. Students were invited into the cockpit of an Airbus A340 flight simulator and a few lucky students were able to take control of the airliner inflight and during takeoff and landing. This is the same simulator that Thai Airways pilots use when training to fly this type of aircraft and for this reason, provides an experience which is second only to the real thing.
