Universities & Careers PDF Print E-mail

The Library - There is a well stocked Careers Section on the middle floor of the Library where you will find university prospectuses, CD ROMs, videos, magazines and many books describing different careers.

Higher Education Conventions - Throughout the year you will have the opportunity to visit a variety of Higher Education conventions to explore university options and to collect information about a wide range of universities and courses. The School will organise transport to/from some of these conventions, for others (such as those on US universities) the School will promote the events, but you will need to make your own arrangements to attend.

Attending conferences is an acceptable reason to miss School, but you must not do this on too many occasions and must apologise in advance to your teachers and should ensure that work missed is quickly caught up.

Visiting University Representatives – The School regularly receives visits from university representatives from across the world. These events will be publicised on the Sixth Form notice board and in Daily Notices. It is your responsibility to check the notice board. If necessary you should excuse yourself from lessons to meet with these speakers, but again work missed must be caught up.

Occasionally these visitors may give a lecture to the whole Sixth Form during a House period.

UCAS (UK Application System) - In the Spring term of Year 12 you will be introduced to the requirements of the UCAS system. You will be given a significant amount of information to help with making your university choices and for completing your application. In the summer between Y12 and Y13 you should be investigating universities and courses. You should also be working on the preparation of your personal statement.

The UCAS process should be completed as early as possible once you enter Year 13 - do not wait until the last moment, but try to get it done early so you can concentrate on your examinations.

Application to other countries – Help and advice is available wherever you wish to apply. Ask your tutor or the Assistant Head of Sixth Form.

Mock University Interview - If necessary we will help you to prepare for university interviews and will put you through ‘mock’ interviews within School.

Gap Year - For some, it is a sensible option to take a gap year between school and university. It is important to plan a gap year rather than using it as an excuse to delay your application to university! You should gain something from a gap year whether it is the finance to support yourself away from home, experience of travel and voluntary work in an economically less developed country or business and management experience. When deciding on a gap year, we recommend that you apply for a deferred place at university during Year 13 rather than apply during your gap year when you may not be so easily available for interviews and less support will be available to you.

There are books and guides to planning a gap year in the Study Room. As ever, ask your tutors for advice if need be.

Other Careers - Much of the planning that goes on in the Sixth Form is orientated towards higher education courses as that is the route chosen by the majority of our students. However, most of the skills learnt are just as valid in the world of work. If you are more interested in pursuing other routes or jobs, we will do as much as we can to help.

If you want help exploring different options of what you want to do when you leave just ASK! There are many people who can help you.
