The GAP Programme at Harrow International School

Harrow International School considers GAP Students as assistant teachers who do not have formal teaching qualifications – in many cases just having completed Year 13 (UK) or a similar school qualification.

Gap students are keen on exploring a new country, culture and traditions from the secure base of a school environment, which provides employment, a living allowance, free accommodation and food in return for providing services in specified fields, and on clearly defined terms of conduct and responsibility. Both the GAP Student and Harrow International School seek to benefit from this interaction.

The GAP Programme at Harrow International School is well-established, and can accommodate two GAP students at any one time, usually one girl and one boy. Gap students are involved academically (providing in class support for students and teachers), in the co-curricular programme (helping to coach teams, run activities etc) and are involved in Boarding. Placement of GAP students is based on experience and interests.

Our GAP students are generally housed in one of the Boarding Houses. Over the weekends Gap students often meet up with other GAP students from other Bangkok based schools to explore the many interesting sights and experiences that Thailand has to offer. During the holiday periods GAP students usually take the opportunity to explore the diversity of South East Asia.

Gap students, individually or as a group, will be asked to complete a small project each half-term and to present their finding s through a small ten minute presentation to a member of SLT.  Projects will initially focus on the gap students themselves (background, aspirations etc), but in subsequent terms may be on aspects of school life or, indeed, issues related to living in Thailand.

Duration of Stay

GAP student placements are considered for a variety of durations. Gap students would be expected to offer a minimum of one full term (September – December; January – March; April – July), though most choose to stay for at least two terms.

Once accepted the GAP student is expected to fulfil their commitment unless there have been problems relating to health, work, behaviour, and attitude, and they are given written permission to leave.

Application Process

We welcome applications from possible gap students who wish to participate in this enriching experience.  Applicants should be 18 years old (at the time they would join Harrow International School) and proficient in English. A willingness to be involved in the academic, co-curricular and the boarding life of the School is essential. Previous experience of boarding is an advantage.

Gap students should initially apply in writing to the Headmaster. Interviews for gap positions are held at Harrow School (London, UK) in February of each year or at Harrow Bangkok. Interviews in other countries are a possibility, please contact us to discuss well in advance of intended placement dates.
