English is a core subject of the English National Curriculum and the National Literacy strategy Framework for Teaching informs all of what we do. All learning takes place through the use of language. Consequently, English is a vital aspect of the whole curriculum and provides children with the skills to communicate effectively and express themselves creatively and imaginatively. The ability to speak, read and write standard English fluently and accurately will enable children to participate confidently in public life. An important means of ensuring success in English at Harrow is the use of the carefully structured Literacy Hour strategy to ensure focused, teaching and learning, although teachers also seek to maximize the potential of cross curricular links. A variety of approaches are used including whole class teaching, cooperative group work and individual guidance; differentiation ensures the effectiveness of learning.

Speaking and listening activities enable children to match their style and response to audience and purpose. Children are taught a range of reading strategies to help them to read independently, and with understanding, a wide range of different types of texts. Writing skills are developed through a variety of activities which enable children to express their ideas clearly.

Children are taught how to structure their writing so that it is coherent, with correct grammar and spelling, and legible handwriting that develops from printing to a cursive style.

There is equal access to the English curriculum for children who have English as a second language and those who have special needs; we take the issues of inclusion and entitlement seriously. There are no withdrawal classes but extra enrichment classes from specialist EAL staff.
