Educating the Whole Child
Activities are offered by Harrow staff and other qualified providers and cover a wide range of experiences and skills in sports, the Performing Arts, hobbies, creative pursuits, games and community projects. Students must commit to a minimum of two activities a week, depending on the age group, while boarders must take four. The activities on offer are updated termly but students are also encouraged to sign-up for long-term activities such as Tae Kwon Do or Ballet.
An important range of activities, designed to encourage students’ independence, responsibility and maturity, take place beyond the school campus. These include day trips to places of relevance to curriculum subjects and residential visits which begin in Year 3 for Harrow pupils. The school takes advantage of the rich historical and environmental sites in Thailand as well as those which provide opportunities for outdoor pursuits. The House Camps, Expeditions and the Duke of Edinburgh Award trips all offer the students ways to extend their learning beyond the classroom.
The School places particular emphasis on developing children’s interests and skills in sports, music and drama. As well as receiving curriculum time, these subjects are very well represented on our co-curricular programmes.
Young sportsmen and women can develop their interests from an early age leading to participation in local and regional tournaments (such as the Bangkok International Schools Activities Council and the Federation of British International Schools in South and East Asia) where a wide variety of team and individual sports are offered. Performing arts are nurtured through curriculum study and specialist tuition which encourage students to appreciate and make music and to perform in a variety of styles. Harrow supports an orchestra, choirs, string ensembles, jazz and rock bands, amongst others, and musicians and actors get to perform to a wide variety of local audiences.
Other activities are focused on community support projects such as working with orphans and fundraising for the charities, which are supported by each House. Similarly, each House supports an environmental project.
As well as the academic curriculum, Harrow offers its pupils a wonderful choice of Co-curricular and Extra-curricular Activities which provide enjoyment, challenge and interest whilst they are at school and beyond. The goal of these activities is to place students on the edge of their physical, mental, social and emotional comfort zones so they grow in the attributes of charity, service, team work, leadership and resilience.
